No you are right econmic freedom and prosperity does not automatically make you non-communist but while Communism in its pure doesn\'t really exist anywhere - what is going on in China right now certainly isn\'t it. Leaving out the Internet censorship for a second, China is very similar at the moment to Singapore in that it is a one party state with government controlling most major assets and a lot of the media.
I spent a bit of time in China this year and was surprised by the amount of freedoms individuals had. I could access sites like Google News which gives you a pretty broad range of views and saw their was criticism of the government in the newspapers when it came to local issues like roads, health, education, etc. (obviously not things like human rights). Then you add to the that the free practice of most religions. The government sanctions Islam, Christianity (Catholic and Protestant/Anglican), Buddhism and Daoism as the 5 official religions of the country. Religion is fundamentally non-communist and when you add the growing individual freedoms, capitalism in business as well as increased openess to the world you end up with a country whilie still dictatorial in nature with a communist leaning in terms of manifesto can hardly be called a Communist country anymore. It is more like countries like Singapore which are one party controlled.

Oil Option...

Our energy policy is something that Congress should be attempting to deal with. Increased research and tax breaks ultimately fall under their jurisdiction.
Maybe a few pork barrell spending items could go towards research instead

[...] But does economic freedom and prosperity make China non-Communist? Look beneath the surface. Communism is about government control, and despite its growing influence in global commerce, China is still very much controlled by its government. When Chinese entrepreneurs try to access the Internet to build their businesses, for example, they find government blocks on Microsoft, Cisco, Yahoo, and Google sites. All media are state controlled. The government also maintains restrictions on people’s ability to speak freely, to own property, to move about, to have children. China is still a one-party state. [...]
